Final

Last week, I got to take pictures of landscapers. For two days, I tagged along with Green Grass Gonzalez Landscaping. In total there were five workers: Miguel Gonzalez, Eduardo Lopez, Dale M., Inocencio Garcia and Gerardo Garcia. The first day of shooting, it was extremely buggy outside. The weather kept changing, which was a challenge to take pictures because I had to change the camera settings often. I was outside with them for three hours.

The second day, I went back to the same house to take pictures of the completed work and then I went to Longport NJ and Margate NJ to take pictures, of how Miguel measures the lawns of new clients to give them an estimate of how much the job will cost. I didn’t take too many pictures because I didn’t feel comfortable being on other people’s property and taking pictures without their permission. Overall, I loved taking pictures and spending time with these hardworking landscapers.

Illegal Immigration in the U.S.

Is illegal immigration in the U.S. an economic or a national security problem? This question has always been a controversial topic, but it wasn’t ever a trending topic until President Trump launched his presidential campaign in 2015. Throughout his campaign, border security was one of his main points. “Mexico will pay for the wall” said Trump back in 2015. Now fast forward to 2019, there was a 35-day government shutdown because Trump didn’t get his funds to build the wall. This shutdown hurt the U.S economy.

In this video, I speak about the two sides of this question and provide other perspectives from students at Rowan University. Some of the statistics provided in this video comes from the New American Economy, The Wall Street Journal and the Libertarian Cato Institute.

Whose Wall?

The long-term effects of President Trump’s decision to declare a national emergency on building a border wall may not be known until years from now, but the short-term effects are now being felt all over the country.

In “Who’s Wall?” a diverse group of students and faculty from Rowan University, were asked a series of questions to find out how much they know about this national emergency, what kind of divisiveness has this decision brought down into their lives, and how media coverage has influenced their thoughts and opinions. Get ready to hear some heart touching stories and ask yourself at the end “Who’s Wall?” is it really?

Vintage Day Spa & Salon

For my Pitman picture story, I went to the Vintage Day Spa & Salon. Earlier that day I went in to ask if it was okay to take pictures, I met stylists Judi Boycott and Joanne Sandon. I also asked when it would be okay to come in. The owner told me to come in around two because they had a few regulars coming in and they thought they would be okay with pictures.

I arrived at two and I met Marlene Stanford and Jean Char. Jean is Judi Boycott’s aunt and Marlene has been going to the Vintage Salon for a few years now. Marlene went to Glassboro high school and now her granddaughter goes there to. Marlene and I spoke for about 10 minutes about Rowan and what I was majoring in. At first, she thought I was a junior at the Glassboro High school, and I said no I’m a junior at Rowan. Everyone there was surprised and then we spoke about Rowan again. And how they’ve seen Rowan grow. Finally, both Marlene and Jean got a hair trim and both left around the same time.

Everyone at the salon was super nice and friendly and no one said no to pictures, but Marlene was about to say no because she said she has never let anyone take her picture. But she was going to make an exception for me. I felt awkward taking their pictures up close. I felt like I was intruding their conversation with their stylist but they didn’t say anything so I kept taking pictures.

All You Need To Know About The 2019 Atlantic City Auction & Car Show

This year the 46th annual Atlantic City Car Show was a three day event from February 8-10, where more than 400 cars were auctioned! This car show was held at the AC Convention Center. Tickets were sold at $25 for adults, $5 for children under 12 and if you came with a group of 20 people then you got a 40% off discount.

Lots of people attended the car show on Saturday, February 9th. Last year it was estimated that around 30,000 people attended the event and its expected to surpass that number this year. AC was not the only city to hold a car show that weekend. Philly (https://www.phillyautoshow.com/)held their 118th car show as well. This didn’t stop people from choosing AC though:

I created a poll on Instagram to see who was attending the car show and as you can see 73% said yes and 27% said no. One person who said they were going was Edwin Calderon, 26 of Egg Harbor Township. Not only was he planing on going Saturday but Sunday as well. Calderon said, “I love cars and I go every year to the car show. Sometimes I go to the Philly one or sometimes both. But this year i’m going to the AC one because i got free tickets.”

There were hundreds of cars and all types of models.

There was definitely a car for everybody’s taste at the car show.

This year Bernie D’Ascendis of Bristol Pennsylvania came to the Atlantic City car show to help out at the event. His favorite section to be stationed at when he’s able to help out in this event is at the sport cars section and at the classic cars section. “I come all the way from Bristol but I enjoy helping out at this event. So many cars from all kinds of years” said D’Ascendis.

Check out the video down below to see what I saw on Saturday, February 9th.

During events like these in Atlantic City many people go eat after hours of walking. I wanted to go see how busy local restaurants get during events like these so I went to Wingcraft. Wingcraft is located right in front of the AC Convention Center. When I got there it was already packed it was around 6 pm. I sat and I ate they have great food and I interviewed Griselda Aparicio, 25, of Somers Point.

Aparicio is a waitress at Wingcraft. She mentioned that she would be working all throughout the AC car show weekend. “The best part of working during a convention like this is that its always busy. Time goes by super fast and I make great tips. Everyone is always super sweet.”

My Overall Experience

I had a great time going to this car show. It was my first car show ever too. I didn’t think the AC Convention Center would be so big. I walked around a lot trying to learn more about cars. I think that is why I enjoyed this event so much because I went without knowing too much about this event and being there I got the chance to meet some nice people. Next year the AC Car Show will be on February 7th through the 9th. So save the date if you would like to go to the 47th annual AC car show.

Results on Engaging the Audience

It was my first time doing a poll on Instagram. I was nervous to create one because I was afraid no one would participate and vote but to my surprise many people actually did. A few people were asking me about the event. Like where this car show would be located and when as well. All of the polls got more than 100 views. I took some pictures and uploaded them to my Instagram story as well. I really focused on promoting or sharing my experience with Instagram. What I could have done differently to engage more people was to use more than one kind of social media. Facebook would have been nice to use but I got really into doing polls on Instagram. For future projects that require engaging the audience i’ll be sure to use multiple media platforms.
